Bala Quila, Alwar: A Fortress of Legends

The Indian state of Rajasthan, translating to the ‘Land of Kings’, reflects its title through the timeless strength of its forts. The state is home to deserts, palaces, forts, tiger reserves, and important pilgrimage sites. Among these marvels, Bala Quila Alwar, also called the Bala Fort or Alwar Fort, stands tall as a timeless sentinel overlooking the city of Alwar. This massive structure, resting atop a hill of the Aravalli range, has guarded the region for centuries and continues to narrate stories of valour, art, and legacy. If you’re a history buff, heritage lover, or a photographer, wondering what it feels like to step into a living fortress of history, this is your chance.

From Mewatis to Rajputs: The Journey of Bala Quila

Bala Quila, Alwar (loosely translating to 'young fort'), was originally built in the 15th century by Hasan Khan Mewati. Over time, it passed through the hands of the Mughals, Marathas, and Jats before becoming part of the Kachwaha Rajput Kingdom of Alwar. The fort is a testament to power and aesthetics with 446 musketry openings situated in its 15 large and 51 small towers, and 6 grand gates that once protected its rulers. Its design is a blend of Rajput and Mughal influences, visible in the robust walls as well as the intricate carvings that adorn its gateways and palaces.

The 6 impressive gates, namely Chand Pol, Suraj Pol, Laxman Pol, Krishan Pol, Andheri, and Jai Pol, welcome visitors with distinct carvings and a force of protection. The inner palaces, including Jal Mahal and Nikumbh Mahal, showcase the royal charm of bygone eras. From the fortifying ramparts, you can enjoy sweeping views of Alwar city and the Aravalli hills, a sight that makes the climb worthwhile. Ancient inscriptions and artefacts tucked within the fort add another layer of depth to your visit, making it not just a sightseeing trip but an immersive experience into Alwar’s past.
