RAJA BABA ALA SINGH

It is named after the venerable saint-soldier – Baba Ala Singh of the Phulkian dynasty who assumed leadership in 1714 AD and carved out an independent principality of 30 villages from a Zamindar. Baba Ala Singh was a part of the Sikh Confederation that sacked and partitioned the erstwhile Mughal province of Sirhind.

In 1763, Baba Ala Singh laid the foundation stone of the Patiala fort known as Qila Mubarak (fort of felicitations) around which the city of Patiala has developed. The Fort was completed by his grandson Amar Singh.

RAJA AMER SINGH

Raja Amar Singh continued to expand the Kingdom. However, his most memorable action was to set free thirty thousand Indians, captured by Ahmed Shah Abdah during the ninth Afghan invasion of India. MAHARAJA KARAM SINGH

Maharaja Karam Singh ascended the throne of Patiala from Raja Sahib Singh and was an able ruler and a devout Sikh. During his reign he helped the British in preventing Gurkha incursions into the Punjab and in return secured a large tract in the Himalayan foothills.  He was occupied with the construction of ‘Samadhi’ of Baba Ala Singh called the Shahi Samadhan (royal cremation ground). He fortified the Bandhavgarh Fort and built a gurudwara dedicated to the Ninth Sikh Guru where he had stayed before he proceeded to Delhi where he was beheaded.

MAHARAJA NARINDER SINGH

This room is named after Maharaja Narinder Singh, the son of Maharaja Karam Singh who aided the British with supplies and carriages during the first Anglo- Sikh war and the uprising of 1857 and was rewarded with additional estates in return. He was a great builder and a patron of art and literature. He fortified Patiala by constructing ramparts and the gates around the city. In 1847 he constructed the Moti Bagh Palace which has 800 rooms and a compound of 5000 acres and was once considered the largest royal residence anywhere in the world. To facilitate art he built the Sheesh Mahal (behind the Moti Bagh Palace). Darbar Hall in Qila Mubarak was also built by him.

Maharaja Yadavindra Singh ascended the throne in 1938. He played cricket for India against England in 1934 and also led the Patiala Polo team.
 
This room is named after Maharaja Yadavindra Singh who was to be the first Maharaja, agreeing to the incorporation of Patiala into the newly independent India. This made him the “Rajpramukh” of the new Indian state of Patiala and East Punjab States Union. He represented India at the UNO and FAO at Rome. He also served as India’s ambassador at the Hague in Holland.

This suite is named after the most famous Maharaja of Patiala of the 20th century both in India and abroad. Maharaja Bhupinder Singh was the son of Maharaja Rajinder Singh and became Maharaja at the age of nine. He served in World War I, the Afghan War in 1919, represented India at the League of Nations and captained the Indian cricket team to tour in England. He also possessed what is now one of the world’s largest collections of Medals and Decoration (3200 in number). These are displayed at the Medals Gallery in the Sheesh Mahal at Patiala. He was best known for his extravagance which included a consort of women, and was the proud owner of the world famous necklace “The Patiala Necklace” manufactured by the famous brand Cartier SA.

Incidentally at the time it was the only college between Delhi and Lahore in the region.
