Charlotte Lake

Charlotte Lake, also known as Sharlott Lake(!) is a serene scenic spot in close proximity to The Verandah in the Forest. It is the prime source of drinking water in the Matheran region. The ancient Pisarnath temple is located at one end of the lake as also two beautiful picnic spots – Louisa Point and Echo Point. During the monsoon season there are waterfalls that spill out around the Lake which make a splendid site. These dry up in the summer even as the lake continues to shimmer.

Valley Crossing

One activity that should not be missed at Matheran is Valley Crossing. The trip is from Honeymoon Point to Louisa Point, both of which are at a walking distance from The Verandah. The points are located on a U- shaped mountain and one has to go from one side to the other which is nearly 900ft – hanging on a rope with a breathtaking view of the 1000 feet of valley below! It is a once-in-a-life-time experience.

Matheran is encircled by red mud paths with as many as 33 look-out points that offer picturesque views! Porcupine Point, Echo Point, Monkey Point, Panorama Point, and Heart Point are some of the popular points to visit and there are many more where you can experience the most stunning views of the sunrise and sunset on the Western Ghats as well as of the Sahyadri range and its valleys.

Walking is very rewarding for all nature lovers and thoroughly enjoyable after the monsoons when wildflowers, hovering with butterflies, are in full bloom. It is a heavenly sight when Karvy or Strobilanthes Callosa are in full bloom. One can commonly find golden langurs, giant squirrels, and other wildlife on the way. There are multiple points all over Matheran which provide stunning views of the valley below.

There are numerous little shops that have leather goods, hats, footwear and the very ambrosial sweet ‘chikki’ – which is a prime attraction here. For the adventurous trekker(s), Matheran is a pure treat. There are multiple trekking routes to Matheran, the most famous being the one through the Garbert Plateau. The journey starts from Bhivpuri station and the climb is particularly special in the rainy season as there are many rivulets and streams that criss cross the expedition.
